When Sixty Seemed So Far Away

When Sixty Seemed So Far Away

LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure

of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am

Psalm 39:4

My mind goes back to years long past

when life, mysterious and vast

brought wonder to me unsurpassed

and sixty seemed so far away

My youth was filled with all the things

that growing up with family brings

it’s to those days that my mind clings

when sixty seemed so far away

But soon it seemed life made no sense

anxiety was so intense

so much of life was mere pretense

still sixty seemed so far away

As years went by I did, it seemed,

find that for which I’d always dreamed

yet something deep within me screamed

and sixty, still, seemed far away

The turmoil of a wanting heart

that could not find what would impart

the answers missing from the start

when sixty seemed so far away

Time is quickly passing by

but growing old I still defy

yet what I know I can’t deny

sixty is not far away

News of illness I receive

it quickly brings me to my knees

the truth, my mind and thoughts, now seize

for sixty may not come my way

So many things go through my mind

from those ahead to those behind

purpose I so want to find

Does sixty matter anyway?

I’ll take the time that does remain

and pray I  live it, not, in vain

God, by His grace, does life sustain

I'll wait for sixty everyday

About the Poet
I am 58 years old and have lived in the Winona Lake area of Indiana for 16 years with my wife and children. I have written poetry for many years and use it primarily in personal ministry. For most of the past two years I have been recovering from cancer, something that God has used to impact my life in remarkable ways. I wrote a series of poems about the emotional and spiritual struggles that accompany having an illness like cancer. I used these to encourage people I met while going through kemo and radiation therapy. Since then, I have used them to minister to many people who struggle with cancer. I work with the chaplaincy in the healthcare wing of a local retirement village near my home where two of my three daughers also work. My wife often accompanies me and we find it very rewarding to be involved in the lives of the people who live there. My website address is http://callofissachar.com (Temporarily inactive)
