I Still Do What I Can

I Still Do What I Can

Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do:

forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:13-14

We all must go through stages as this pilgrimage we take

and change comes with them that we must accept

sometimes change is welcome, bringing that which we await

but sometimes, mystery that life has kept

It's at those times when limits will accompany this change

that often we will view life with a sigh

we tend to focus on those things we can, no longer, do

thinking that our life has passed us by

But if we will believe what God has told us in His Word

then we will see our life much differently

for God has purpose planned for all the stages of our lives

and blessings that our finite minds can't see

Child of God, take heart in knowing grace will see you through

the strength that you will need God holds in store

you can face the future with the greatest confidence

and meaning you have never known before

My dear fellow poets,
This poem reflects the battle that accompanies cancer, and with it comes accepting the changes as well.  I hope that this poem will be encouraging to those who are also learning to accept the changes of life, no matter what circumstance God uses to bring them into our lives.

About the Poet
I am 58 years old and have lived in the Winona Lake area of Indiana for 16 years with my wife and children. I have written poetry for many years and use it primarily in personal ministry. For most of the past two years I have been recovering from cancer, something that God has used to impact my life in remarkable ways. I wrote a series of poems about the emotional and spiritual struggles that accompany having an illness like cancer. I used these to encourage people I met while going through kemo and radiation therapy. Since then, I have used them to minister to many people who struggle with cancer. I work with the chaplaincy in the healthcare wing of a local retirement village near my home where two of my three daughers also work. My wife often accompanies me and we find it very rewarding to be involved in the lives of the people who live there. My website address is http://callofissachar.com (Temporarily inactive)
