NOTES:

Today has been mostly sunny with a high temperature of 61 degrees. I went to the soup luncheon today with Charley. We sat at a table with Bill for a little while. I had potato soup today. We have one more week of the soup luncheon. After I ate my soup and dessert I went to the table where my pastor and wife and ladies from our church were sitting. I visited with them for 10 or 15 minutes before going on to the post office for my mail. I took a nap this afternoon with Smokey. I put the food and treats out for the cats at around 6:00 p.m. but it was too cool to sit out this evening. I heard from Don and Wanda, a couple from our church, who said they didn't get the Good Things last night so I sent them another copy. If you ever miss the Good Things and want a copy, just let me know. Thanks for your emails and thanks for reading the Good Things.

The cats are fine. I shared with the people from our church today how my children and I believe with all our heart that Flonnie sent Rascal to us. He is in the recliner now. He goes outside with the other cats and he sleeps somewhere by himself a lot during the day. He also checks on me and lies in my lap quite often when I am sitting reading, watching tv or working puzzles. The other cats also give me a lot of attention so I know they all love me. I have seen all of the cats this evening.

I had a note from Geneva telling me about her two older brothers who were in World War 2. I am sure that Geneva will not mind if I share her notes with you tonight. Here are her notes:

Two of my oldest brothers were in WW2, one in the Navy and the other in the Coast Guard. The oldest (93) still lives in a house by himself. He's just been amazing! However, now he reads books about that war, goes to bed and dreams and, when he awakes, he says he's been there and done that. He actually was on a ship that patroled the coasts of America. One week he'd be in tropical weather and almost the next week he'd be in arctic weather. They had leather mittens with sheep's wool inside and head gear to match along with really warm coats. His ship helped to capture a German short wave radio station in the northern most area. The name of the ship was the Westwind and it has now been scuttled.

Not all of the love letters had a happy ending. Sandra Eve MacDuffee's father, John Chichilla, was killed in 1945. His letters from the Christmas season of 1944 have a special poignancy.

Sandra writes: "My dad was killed two days before my second birthday in 1945, so I have no memories of him, which to me is the saddest part of it all. I have a lot of pictures, thanks to my mom's diligence and she and I talked about him a lot as I got older. My dad is buried in a military cemetery in Luxembourg and when I was sixteen, my mom ordered an aerial photo of the cemetery with his cross circled in pencil. We also got a close-up snapshot of his cross that enables us to read his name and outfit. The day that picture arrived was a day of many tears for both mom and me, and of an overwhelming sense of loss. . . .

I miss him more and more as I get older, not ever having known him and wondering what my life would be like today if he had come home safe. My mom remarried, but she never stopped loving my dad and she never stopped grieving for him. Mom also had a 'Lost Love Remembered' scrapbook full of newspaper clippings, cards from dad and photos of the two of them and me."

Flonnie kept all the letters that I wrote to her and I still have them someplace. Even though I had only met her one time before I went overseas, I think both of us had a feeling that we would someday be married..

NOTES:

Today has been partly cloudy with a high temperature of 82 degrees. We had a few light sprinkles of rain at my house a few minutes ago but the heavier rain went to the north of us tonight. I had lunch with Charley and Bill. Kathy cleaned my house while I was at lunch as she will be out of town the next two days. Tomorrow is the day for the soup luncheon which I think will be the last one for this year. I went to the post office and while I was out I made my weekly trip to Walmart for cat food and human food and supplies. I took a nap this afternoon with Beau and Tony. I put food and treats out for the animals around 6:00 p.m. and sat with them for a few minutes. Thanks for your emails and thanks for reading the Good Things. I will leave a few sentences on Lest We Forget at the end of the Good Things.

The cats are fine. Lucy and Rascal are the only ones with me at present. Lucy is on a tv tray and Rascal is lying in the floor looking out the door that is slightly ajar if he wants to go out. I have seen all the cats this evening.
