Relationships and the Dance

Relationships and the Dance

Relationships are very funny things.
They remind me of being at a dance.
The intensity of the tango,
the light heartiness of the waltz,
the gaiety of the square dance,
and the forever most loved
romantic slow dance,
is best of all.

It's amazing to watch
from the very old to very young
the flirty but coy looks,
the gentle laughter
secretive unspoken desires.
It can all be seen and felt,
if you sit and just watch.
Yes, courting, loving,
married or no,
it is all the same,
young or old.

The only difference
that I have been able to see
in my many years of watching
is the young take such intensity,
light heartiness, gaiety and romance
for granted musing the idea
it will last forever
with no effort put forth.
Where as the older generation
appreciates the gift of each other,
knowing that any day
it just might end.
So, when I see a man lead his wife
of many years onto the dance floor
slightly pauses, looks deeply into her eyes,
and they exchange that wonderful coy smile,
then takes her in his arms
and dance the true dance
of loves romance,
you can see
they never took it for granted.
