Mother's Call

Mother's Call

The time I feared has finally come
The telephone rang
I answered, a young man's
voice said, "Mom, we are being deployed."

My tears welled,
spilling down, over trembling lips
I found it within me to speak,
"Well… Son, I knew the time would come.
You and all your friends are young,
so very brave, please do me one
favor?"

His voice gave a tremble as he said,
"Sure Mom, anything for you."
Holding back the scream of pain
I was trying to be brave,
"Please be careful Son, please be brave, please
Son, come home smiling, not in a box for
me to lower in a grave."

He was silent for a moment, then finally said.
"Mom, I am a soldier my job is to protect. I can't make
any promises; the future is unclear.
This promise I will keep to you,
I promise to be careful, watch each n' every step.
But I am a soldier, a choice I made,
To guard everyone in this land
Especially you
...It's time for me to go n' do
What I trained to do."

Some months later
No word, nor letter to be read
The fear inside grew,
To a deafening, deathly, dread

On one early Saturday morn
A knock beckoned me to the door
My eyes began to tear
My heart began to race
For the thing I feared the most
May have come to my humble place

The knock with force grew louder
I froze… starring at the door.
With trembling hands
I turned the knob
Brought the door open
There stood a man in a uniform
Though I could not see his face
Tears spilled freely down my cheeks
Then a voice finally spoke.

"Mom I kept my promise,
I was careful n' took care.
Now open the darn door,
It's freezing out here!"

Note:My Son (in law) has just now been called away i received his call last evening and I guess this is my way of seeing a postive end.....I pray that all our brave men and women who have been called to the impending war are kept safe and return to their loved ones at a speedy pace!
