Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving

Long ago in old New England
  There began an awesome feast
Pilgrims grateful for a homeland
Gave God thanks to say the least

Indians were all invited
They had helped these folks survive
Some new recipes delighted
  Everyone now hoped to thrive

That feast launched a great tradition
  Few complaints are ever heard
Though some turkeys pose plain question
Why weren’t we the chosen bird

No one ever ate an eagle
  Turkeys make such sacrifice
Making them the nation’s symbol
  Might have merited the price

People don’t just stuff the turkey
  All too many stuff themselves
From Plymouth to Albuquerque
  Folks deplete their well-stocked shelves

Corn becomes cornucopia
  Pumpkin pie and candied yams
Far cry from Ethiopia
  Facing other kinds of jams

Lack of worship and thanksgiving
Is the cause of man’s decline
Good thing God is so forgiving
  When our ways are asinine

Give God thanks today and always
Whether times are fat or lean
He is worthy of each man’s praise
Though no turkey sets the scene

About the Poet
Born in Anacortes WA USA on 11/24/1944. Raised mostly in Nyasaland(now Malawi) by missionary parents. Married to Carol, an Australian, who is the mother of our four children. After Seattle Pacific University and graduate studies at Princeton Theological Seminary and marriage, spent over two decades in missionary work mostly in Zimbabwe. Currently in Anacortes, but for 12 years did a regular program on www.swradioafrica.com where I sometimes shared poetry which I have been writing, off and on, since 1962. God's faithfulness is from everlasting to everlasting.
