Conundrum
Viewed Last 24 Hours: 1 time

Other Poems by Jean C. Wheeler

Conundrum

Faith
based on truth
seen and unseen

Science
based on truth
overt and observable

Faith and science
implied conflict, myth
conundrum
standing on the same foundation
unaware

Apparent enemies?
destined to travel separate paths
speaking different languages
for those who will hear

Or fair-weather friends?
when crossroads are perceived
as rendezvous
cozy and non-threatening

Variant in viewpoint
Science--standing on empirical knowledge
incomplete
Faith--standing on eternal truth
holistic

Truth, great iconoclast
the glue that marries
faith and science
when discovered by both
dissolves conflict
dispels compromise
destroys myth

About the Poet
I am a former psychology professor at a bible college, Christian liberal arts colleges, and a seminary. I also spoke mainly for church and para-church organizations, and have recently retired from my clinical practice where I did psychotherapy mostly with Christians. My life bible verse is II Timothy 1:7--"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Currently, I write, paint, dance, volunteer and read voraciously among other things. Who said that retirement is boring? Not me.
