 Opal

She showed serenity's face though storms

Had taken tolls, dimmed all hues,

Arthritic joints the Waterloo

Along with dearth of folks to tend

Defaulting county home this widow's end.

Roommate's ship had long since sailed

Leaving mindless cries in wake,

Midnight madness oft would shake

Seraphic presence fleeing room

Enhancing eerie gloom.

But Opal was an anchor, strong

Attached, or so it seemed,

To some unplumbed supporting beam,

Bearing up all tempest tossed

Releasing light, loving lost.

Disfigured hands did not eclipse

Long passion of this jeweled soul,

Knit one, purl two creaky rolled,

In time appeared upon the bed

Soft and warm, an afghan red.

When night was pierced with panicked screams

Torment reaching fevered pitch

Fragile fingers railing gripped

Angelic rising, deftly placed

Crimson coat where darkness quaked.

This never failed to have effect

Ranting tapered, sleep ensued,

Tunic seemed somehow imbued

Tinctured by a paschal hand

Vesting peace 'neath soothing strands.

When Opal passed many feared

Fallout from undampered angst,

Absence of this fallen saint

'peared to guarantee in spades

Fractured nights, unbalanced rage.

But when the rant began to soar

Prompting prayer amongst the folk

Hopeful hands o'er laid the cloak

Hymns flowed forth, disturbance stubbed,

"Peace Like a River", "Washed in the Blood."

Nightly witnessed sacrament

Thus continued many years

Until at last, from vale of tears

Roommate robed in sanguine Presence

Sailed through gates of opalescence.
